Dieter Baumann is one of the most popular and richest German olympic athlete who was born on February 9, 1965 in Blaustein, Baden- Württemberg, Germany. Dieter Baumann (born 9 February 1965) is an ex- German athlete who was the winner of 5000 meters in the 1992 Summer Olympics. He also took home gold in that same race (5000 meters) in the 1988 Summer Olympics. In 1999, Baumann came back positive for nandrolone. He was then given two years of suspension.
Baumann did not compete in the following season due to injuries However, he returned to his European Championships in 1994. In the 5,000m finale, Baumann good in the field and utilized his famous kick that he smashed to outrun Rob Denmark of the UK on the final lap to take home his gold medal. In the World Championships in Gothenburg, in the 5,000-meter final, Baumann inexplicably lost contact with the lead group three laps to finish and was left with a disappointing ninth position. But, just a few days following his disappointment in Gothenburg, Baumann ran one of the fastest races of his career. He broke his own national record (13:01.72) to finish second in Zurich in front of Haile Gebrselassie.
In the next year he won a silver medal in 10,000 m at the European Championships held in Budapest. He also tried to defend his title over 5,000 m but did not even come close to winning a medal. In one of his last great races he set a new personal best over 3,000 m in Monaco in 7:30.50 min in August 1998.
On 19 October 1999 Baumann tested positive for nandrolone and received a two- year suspension, thus missing the 2000 Summer Olympics. The exact circumstances of this episode remain unclear. Baumann was voluntarily tested after the initial results by an independent institute. Extremely high levels of nandrolone continued to be found in the tests and the results of the tests fluctuated dramatically depending on which time of day Baumann was tested. After several weeks of voluntary tests, Baumann claimed that the results varied with the time of day because the nandrolone was in his toothpaste. The German Athletics Federation (DLV) reluctantly believed Baumann that someone had manipulated his toothpaste and allowed him to start at the German championships where Baumann qualified for the Olympic Games in Sydney. However, the IAAF did not agree with that verdict and imposed a ban. Baumann tried to sue the IAAF before a German court but was unsuccessful. Those defending Baumann have pointed to the fact that the levels of nandrolone found in his body were completely abnormal for any athlete wishing to enhance his performance. Baumann’s opponents argued that he had no conclusive proof for his version of the story and could not name a suspect. According to Doping expert Wilhelm Schänzer the banned substance went into his involuntary. He further concluded that in former East Germany, athletes were attacked with these substances, it was an attack on him.
In the early months of 1992, Baumann just missed the 3,000-meter world indoor record. In June, at a race in Seville Baumann set a new German record for 5,000 meters (13:09.03). In the Olympics in Barcelona the 5000 m final was started at a speedy pace, but it slowed and boosted Baumann’s advantage due to his finish kick. He was however trapped in a group of four African runners on the back of the final lap and only managed to break free when he entered the final straight. Then, Baumann launched into a terrifying sprint to get past his rivals and win the silver medal. In the following year, Baumann announced an attempt to set a world record over 3,000 meters at the event in Cologne. But, he failed to take the victory because Moses Kiptanui took the win by setting the world record for the fastest time.
