After meeting Joe Swanberg at SXSW in 2005, they decided to work together and team up together with Greta Gerwig and producer Anish Savjani, and Cinematographer Matthias Grunsky to make “Nights and Weekends.” In 2006, Dia went to the bayou in Arkansas to make Alex Karpovsky’s movie “Woodpecker.” In 2010 she was nominated for an award called the Independent Spirit Awards Piaget Producers Award.
After graduating from college, Dia moved to Boston and began working as a documentary filmmaker Errol Morris, on productions like Mr. Death, The Fog of War and his popular television show, “First Person.” In Boston, she met Justin Rice who introduced her to Andrew Bujalski on the day Andrew returned in Boston following his move from Los Angeles. Shortly after, Bujalski made “Funny Ha Ha,” an idea which he was trying to make happen in LA and then filmed in Boston. The film is believed to have the beginning of the mumblecore film movement. Dia later made Bujalski’s “Mutual Appreciation” and “Beeswax.”
She was hired and they became Executive Producers of MTV’s popular program 16 as well as Pregnant, Teen Mom, Teen Mom 2, and Teen Mom 3 which are believed to have significantly reduced the birth rate of teens. Together, they created 11th Street Productions, a production firm for TV and film.
