Devon Toews (/’ D e v @n T eI V Z TAYVZ ; born on February 21, 1994) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman who plays for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). Toews was selected in the 108th spot in the overall draft in the Islanders in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

On April 15th of 2016 Toews decided to end his collegiate experience and signed a 3-year entry-level deal to the New York Islanders. While he was finishing his collegiate time, Toews took classes at Quinnipiac and was graduated in May 2017. In his first season as a player playing for Bridgeport, Toews tied all rookie defencemen with points and placed tenth out of defencemen across the AHL. Toews also set the Raymond Giroux record for most assists for an rookie defenceman, with 40. In the end, he was chosen to take part during the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic and was selected to the All-Rookie team following the conclusion this season. At the 2017 AHL All-Star Classic, Toews took home his first prize in the Fastest Skater competition with a time of 13.478.

After attending the Islanders’ training camp ahead of the 2018–19 season, Toews was reassigned to the Sound Tigers. On December 19, 2018, Toews earned his first NHL recall after he had recorded 19 points in 24 games, which ranked second amongst Sound Tiger defencemen. Toews made his NHL debut on December 23 against the Dallas Stars while playing on a pairing with Luca Sbisa. He wore the jersey number 25, becoming the 20th Islander to done that number. On January 3, 2019, in his fifth NHL game, Toews recorded his first NHL point, the game winning goal, in a 3–2 overtime win against the Chicago Blackhawks. He became the 18th player in the modern era to score their first NHL goal in overtime. The Islanders qualified for the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs, where they defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in four games. The team then faced the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round where Toews subsequently recorded his first career playoff goal on May 1, 2019. He became the third Islanders rookie defenseman in the last 25 years to score a postseason goal. Following their elimination, Toews trained at Quinnipiac University and in Vancouver with NHL veterans Morgan Rielly and Shea Theodore.

Toews began his first season in Quinnipiac University during the 2013-14 season. In his accounting major, Toews was a part of 37 games and scored 17 points. Toews scored his first collegiate goal on the 27th of November in a 3-3 draw against Providence and finished this season with 17 goals. After the season Toews was selected on the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team due to his GPA at 3.46. Though he was not selected twice in the NHL Entry Draft as an 18and 19 year old, Toews was drafted 108th overall by the New York Islanders at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Toews began playing in the youth league with the Yale Hockey Academy at the age of six. The following season, he played as a member of his team, the Abbotsford Hawks Bantam A1 Hawks which he assisted in helping them achieve the B.C. Bantam Tier 1 title and finish second in the Western Canadians. But, due to his small size at the time and his height of 5’2″, Toews was initially not considered by teams with him in the Western Hockey League (WHL) when he emerged after bantam competition. Toews joined the major-midget squad that was the Fraser Valley Bruins with Mackenzie Skapski and both sustained injuries from an accident that occurred on a bus on the 11th of December, 2009. However, Toews returned to the Fraser Valley Bruins, where his growth rate increased and was the top player among all BC Hockey Major Midget League defensemen with 37 points over 39 games over the course of the season 2010-11. The Bruins were able to offer him an invitation to the Surrey Eagles of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).

Toews played for Toews played for the Surrey Eagles for two seasons. In his debut season the team was named to the BCHL All-Rookie Team and was also offered an entire hockey college scholarship at Quinnipiac University. But, Toews returned to the Eagles for the 2012-13 season. During that time, he took home his first BCHL Championship and the Western Canada Cup in Nanaimo. Toews was awarded MVP for the Western Canada Cup and was chosen for the all- tournament squad. On the 1st of November of 2012 Toews got selected as a representative for Team Canada West at the 2012 World Junior A Challenge. He took part in four matches and was awarded an award of silver. He was also a part of the BCHL First All-Star Team. The Eagles played during the 2013 Royal Bank Cup, losing to the Summerside Western Capitals in the semi-finals. Toews was still voted the top Defender of the tournament’s opening round.

Over his three seasons with the Bobcats, Toews led Quinnipiac to multiple NCAA Tournaments. During his final season with the team, he helped lead the Bobcats to the 2016 National Championship against North Dakota. Although the team would lose 5–1, Toews set career highs that season in goals, assists and points, earning All-ECAC Hockey Second Team honours. He was also named a New England Second Team All-Star and was named a finalist for the ECAC Hockey Best Defensive Defenseman as he ended the season with a +27 while collecting 30 points.
