Teves was the son of Armando Teves who was a teacher and Phillippa Brain-Teves who was a professor on February 18, 1995. He is the father of two brothers. Teves went to school within Calgary in West Island College.

In the 2015-16 season, Teves was a part of in the Princeton Tigers. In his first campaign, the player played in 31 games and scored 7 points. The offense picked up during the next season when he was the top Tiger defensemen in scoring at 25 with his 25-point scoring. But, after making it in the 2017 ECAC Hockey Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament Finals, Princeton lost to Union College. After this season Teves received a spot on the first team of All-Ivy League and was invited to join the Calgary Flames’ 2017 Development Camp.

In his senior year, Teves was named to the ECAC Hockey Pre-Season All-League Team and selected as team captain. That season, Teves led the team’s defencemen in scoring as Princeton qualified for the 2019 ECAC Hockey Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament. He was also nominated for the Hockey Humanitarian Award for his community service work and named a finalist for the 2018–19 Senior CLASS Award. However, Princeton was swept by Brown University in the first round, effectively ending Teves’ collegiate career. On March 18, 2019, Teves was again selected for the All-ECAC Hockey third-team.

Teves was back at Princeton to play his junior year in which he was the top scorer among all defensemen in scoring at 33 points. Princeton was able to qualify for an appearance in the ECAC Tournament, where they beat Clarkson University in a 2-1 overtime win to earn the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament place in the very first time since 2009. Teves was selected as a member of the All-ECAC Hockey third-team, becoming the first Tigers defenseman since 2012 to be awarded the honor, and was also chosen as a member of the first team All-Ivy League. But the Tigers fell 4-2 to Ohio State University in the first round.

Joshua Michael Brain Teves (born on 18 February 1995) is a Canadian professional defenceman in ice hockey who is currently playing with the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League (AHL) as a possible prospect to the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL).

From 2011 until the year 2013, Teves was a minor hockey team, the Calgary Royals. After finishing his studies at West Island College, Teves was a player in the Fernie Ghostriders of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) in 2013-14 season. He then signed a commitment for NCAA Division 1 ice hockey at Princeton University for the Tigers men’s hockey team. Then, he joined the Merritt Centennials of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) for the 2014-15 season, during which Teves was awarded the Coach’s Choice award as well as the Most Remarkable award. Teves was also the very first Centennial player to receive an RBC National Junior A Scholarship.

On March 12, 2019, as an undrafted NHL free agent, Teves signed a one-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks. He made his NHL debut on March 26 in Vancouver’s 5–4 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.
