Derk Pereboom (born 1957) is the Susan Linn Sage Professor in Philosophy and Ethics at Cornell University. He specializes in free-will and moral responsibility and philosophy of mind. He also specializes in religion and philosophy, as well as in the writings that of Immanuel Kant.

Pereboom advocates a variant of nonreductive physicalism. It was an idea that was that was proposed by Hilary Putnam in the 1960s according to which different kinds of mental states aren’t similar to state at lower levels like the microphysical and neural. The nonreductive position he defends departs from others in that it also rejects all token-identity (i.e., specific- instance-identity) claims for the relation between mental states and states at lower levels. The relationship between the mind and the physical is a matter of nature, and it is a condition that this relationship cannot be explained through the concept of identity. However, mental properties are similar to higher-level compositional property which are properties that objects possess because of the nature of their components and the relationships between them. Pereboom claims that this theory is a valid proof of mental causation in contrast to the more widely accepted functionalist view. In this regard, his view may be a compromise with theory of type-identity. But, his position is not a reductive identification theory since he believes it is true that the properties associated with mental composition can be multi-perceivable at any higher level as the cognitive (e.g. that of the brain).
