In 1990, he was thrown unconscious after being hit by youthful Argentine Front row player Federico Mendez, which saw Mendez removed from the field. Mendez later claimed that it was a miscalculation of identity, and said he was trying to strike Jeff Probyn since he “stamped on my goolies”. Ackford was a part of the England team that took home the Five Nations Grand Slam in 1991. He resigned from international rugby following the 1991 World Cup, which was won by Australia before becoming journalist and writing in The Sunday Telegraph.
As a police constable, he was partnered with Wade Dooley, Ackford became an integral part of the side that was recently coached by Will Carling. He was part of his 1989 British Lions tour to Australia and played in all three of the tests.
