Derek MacKenzie (born June 11 1981) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He most prominently played for the Atlanta Thrashers, Columbus Blue Jackets and the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected at 128th overall, by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. MacKenzie was also a part of the American Hockey League (AHL) for Columbus as well as Atlanta’s farm teams, which are the Syracuse Crunch and Chicago Wolves respectively. When he was with the Wolves, MacKenzie was part of the Calder Cup championship team in 2002, and was also a part of the team as captain of the team. MacKenzie set records for the franchise in goals scored by shorthanded players in each of the AHL teams. The father of his son, Ken MacKenzie, is the assistant general manager of the Ontario Hockey League’s Sudbury Wolves. The current position is assistant coach to the Florida Panthers, whom he was captain from 2016 until the year 2018.
At the end of last season, MacKenzie has been signed by Columbus Blue Jackets to one-year two-way, one-way contract. He started the season with the AHL playing for the Syracuse Crunch. The team made its Blue Jackets debut on December 10, 2007 in a game in a game against Anaheim Ducks; he was transferred to Syracuse the next day. In the course of the season, MacKenzie was called back for his debut NHL score with Mike Smith in a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. After the campaign, Columbus renewed the contract of MacKenzie to an agreement for two years. He continued to split his time in Columbus as well as Syracuse until the season of 2010-11. While in Syracuse He set the Crunch record for team with 11 shorthanded goals in his career. He made himself an NHL regular in the 2010-11 season and ended the season with career-highs of goals (9) and assists (14) as well as scoring (23) and a plus- minus rating. His +14 was the most for a forward, and the third-highest number for a forward in Blue Jackets history. After making himself known, MacKenzie became a fixture on the Blue Jackets’ fourth line and was a key part of their penalty killing. In the following season, he stayed all of the season playing for the Blue Jackets. At the close of the season MacKenzie was hit by a concussion, and did not play in the last sixteen games. MacKenzie scored 7 goal and 14 point over an all-time high of 66 games, and led in scoring for the Blue Jackets with a +4 rating. After passing an offseason physical because of concussion issues, Columbus re-signed MacKenzie to an extension of two years.
Following his final season at Sudbury, MacKenzie joined the Thrashers’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate and the Chicago Wolves. He scored 15 goals and 25 points. Also, he made his NHL debut with the Thrashers in the course of the season with the Columbus Blue Jackets on April 12th 2002. At the end of the season, the Wolves had an 86-point lead and were in the playoffs. Through the playoffs MacKenzie played a key role in helping the Wolves to win their very first Calder Cup championship. In the following 3 seasons MacKenzie was a regular player for the Wolves and helped them return to their Calder Cup finals in 2005. Following the 2005 year, MacKenzie was appointed captain of the team. In the first minutes of his match at home as captain MacKenzie ran into the net of the opponent and injured his ankle. MacKenzie returned to the field later on in the year and led the Wolves to their 500th victory. In the match, MacKenzie scored his third career hat-trick, scoring a 7-3 win against the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights. MacKenzie finished the season playing 36 games, scoring 22 and 10 goals and the Wolves had an 86-point deficit and did not make their first playoff appearance in the history of the franchise. MacKenzie played for a second time in the Thrashers system prior to becoming an unrestricted free agent. MacKenzie concluded the Thrashers career with two assists , and 20 penalty minute (PIMs) during the 28 NHL games, as well as the team scored 83 goals in 377 of their games and scores of 184 points for Chicago. The player also established a record in the club for goals in the shorthanded category with 21 goals.

MacKenzie started his junior career playing for his home team, the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). After the second season in which he increased his points score from 20 to 87 points, MacKenzie was chosen to the Atlanta Thrashers in the fifth round, 128 overall in 1999’s National Hockey League (NHL) entry draft. In his final season he scored 40 goals and 89 goals, which led the Wolves in points , and finished at sixth place at the OHL. He also had the face-off winning percentage of 67% and won both the OHL as well as the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Face-off Awards.
On the international stage, MacKenzie represented Canada at the 2001 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. MacKenzie scored a goal as well as three points over seven games. After playing only one game that season, he retired in the offseason and was named an assistant coach for the Panthers on June 4, 2019.
