Georgia. A Democrat she was Georgia’s 4th congressional district within the United States House of Representatives from 2003 until 2005.

Soon after leaving the House, Majette entered private law practice in Atlanta. In March 2006, Majette announced her candidacy for state School Superintendent of Georgia. She defeated substitute teacher Carlotta Harrell in the primary, garnering 67% of the vote. In the general election, however, Majette lost to Republican incumbent Kathy Cox by a large margin.

On March 28, 2014, the Georgia Supreme Court disbarred Majette, finding she overbilled clients and misled the Court about how much she was owed in fees.

She left the position of judge in 2002 to be a candidate for in the U.S. House of Representatives in Georgia’s 4th congressional district, which is located within DeKalb County. She beat incumbent Cynthia McKinney in the Democratic primary. Majette has never participated in a political contest prior to her victory, beat McKinney with 58%-42 percent margin. McKinney was the subject of controversy for her remarks in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The primary was also influenced by crossover-Republicans–i.e., Republicans who used their ability to vote in a Democratic caucus in Georgia. The victory of Majette was akin to winning the election in this Democratic district that is predominantly black.

Born in Brooklyn in Brooklyn, she was a student at Yale University and completed a Juris Doctor degree at Duke University in 1979. Her legal career began within North Carolina as a Legal Aid staff attorney as well as a law professor adjunct in Wake Forest University. A resident of Stone Mountain, an Atlanta neighborhood that is Stone Mountain since 1983, Majette was in private practice law before being appointed as an Administrative Law Judge on the Georgia state board of workers’ compensation in the year 1992. In the following year, Georgia Governor Zell Miller appointed her as a judge for the State Court of DeKalb County. Majette was judge during nine months.

After serving one period of service in the U.S. House, Majette was able to decide to run for the U.S. Senate seat being left vacant by Zell Miller who was elected to the post in 2000 following the demise of Republican Paul Coverdell. Miller’s decision to not run for an entire time in the Senate was what took Georgia Democrats off guard. Majette’s announcement that they would run to replace Miller also took Democrats off guard, since she wasn’t on any list of candidates at the time Democrats began looking for a candidate to succeed Miller. A further skepticism from Democrats about the legitimacy of her candidacy was evident when she revealed she believed that “God” had told her to be a candidate to run for Senate.

McKinney regained her seat in the 2004 election. While McKinney had made no secret that she wanted her old seat back, it is not known whether Majette’s decision to run for the Senate was related to a possible rematch against McKinney.
