The singer was raised in Chicago, Illinois, United States and Farr began her singing career in the mid-1970s , with diverse soul groups. Deitra was a graduate of Kenwood High School (Academy) in Chicago. She studied vocals there alongside Lena McLin and was a part of the Kenwood Choir. When she was 18, Farr recorded the lead vocals for “You Won’t Support Me” in Mill Street Depo, the Chicago Group Mill Street Depo. The song was featured on an appearance on the Top 100 R&B list with Cashbox magazine. She started singing blues in the mid-80s. From 1993 to 1996 she was the lead vocalist in the band Mississippi Heat and recorded two albums with them: Learned the Hard Way and Thunder in my Heart.
Since 1990, she’s been performing around the world, and has performed in more than 30 countries. Farr is graduated from Columbia College Chicago, with a bachelor’s education in journalistic studies. She writes a weekly column titled “Artist to Artist” in Living Blues magazine.
In October 2015, Farr was inducted into the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame as a “Legendary Blues Artist”.
