Growing growing up living in Geelong, Breamlea and Torquay with his parents as well as two sisters and two brothers. In the early 1980s, Dean began racing BMX bikes and also taking dirt bike rides. In the middle of the 1980s Dean began to skateboard and began to be quite popular on the skatepark’s indoor circuit in Geelong. Turner later got married Linda Bosidis and in 2004 became father to his daughter. His daughter’s birth Charlie was shortly followed with the arrival of his son Evie.

Turner started playing bass guitar around 1989, and in 1990, he formed Deer Bubbles with Adalita Srsen. In 1991, the two along guitarist Daniel Herring, started a new group that was initially named The Jim Jims. Along with drummer Adam Robertson, they became popular by the name of “Magic Dirt”.

At the 2013 Laneway Festival, the “Dean Turner Project” was launched as an expansion of the collaboration and was also featured at the 2014 event. The addition to the collaboration includes financial support for the “Yiriman Project”, an organisation that supports young indigenous people in the south- west Kimberley region of Western Australia, where suicide rates have been high.
