Singh’s second novel The Myself of Mona Ahmed was published in 2001 after over a decade in photojournalism assignments. A blend of photobook, autobiography, biography, along with fiction. The “visual novel’ came about because of her insistence on not being the protagonist in what would have otherwise been a typical but a problematic photojournalistic venture and also her displeasure with the tendency of the West to look at India through superficial and exotic lenses.

Singh’s works have also been presented at the German pavilion in the Venice Biennale. In 2009, the Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid organised a retrospective of her work, which subsequently travelled to Amsterdam, Bogota and Umea. Her pictures of “File Rooms” were first presented in the exhibition, Illuminazione, at the 2011 Venice Biennale.

Museum Bhavan has been shown at the Hayward Gallery, London (2013), the Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2014), the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago (2014) and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi (2016).

Singh has studied visual Communication in her school, the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad as well as documentary photography from the International Center of Photography in New York City. She began her career in the field of photojournalism, and then was laid off in the mid 1990s.

Singh’s first attempt at bookmaking and photography came from an unintentional meeting to tabla musician Zakir Hussain, when he asked her to take pictures of his rehearsals after she was pushed by an unfriendly official when trying to capture him in the middle of a concert. After six winters, following this incident, Singh took pictures of various Hussain concerts and, in 1986, finally released her photographs in her debut collection, Zakir Hussain. She referred to Hussain being her “first “true guru”, Singh believes that Hussain taught her the most essential of all talents: concentration.

Singh was awarded the Prince Claus Award in 2008. In 2013, she became the first Indian to have a solo show at London’s Hayward Gallery.

It is an “exhibition” in the form of a book, with “galleries” held in a small box containing nine thin accordion books that expand to a 7.5-foot-long gallery of black and white photos drawn from Singh’s archive.
