In July 2010 , he resigned from football for Lumezzane in order to succeed the head coach who was stepping down Leonardo Menichini at the helm of the club. On June 28, 2011 his contract was extended.
Nicola was the father of Alessandro, who died in a road accident in 2014, aged only 14.
On 17 November 2014, he became the new manager for F.C. Bari.
At the Serie B 2005-06 playoffs he scored a goal which earned the Torino F.C. an opportunity to move up from Serie B to Serie A. For the season 2006/07 in Serie B his good play for Spezia Calcio during the final few games helped Spezia being able to avoid the possibility of being dropped.
