David Meyer Wessel (born February 21st 1954) is an American journalist and writer. He has been awarded two Pulitzer Prizes for his journalism. He is the director of the Hutchins Center on Fiscal & Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution and a contributing reporter to The Wall Street Journal, which he was with for over 30 years. Wessel is often on NPR’s Morning Edition.
He and staff of the WSJ personnel were nominated to be part of the Public Service in 2003 but was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2003 for Explanatory Reporting. The award was based on “clear, concise and comprehensive stories that illuminated the roots, significance and impact of corporate scandals in America”.
Wessel is the author of three books and the editor of Central Banking after the Great Recession (2014), which features an interview between Ben Bernanke and Liaquat Ahamed as well as chapters by John C. Williams, Donald Kohn, and Paul Tucker.
Wessel is a native of New Haven, Connecticut. He is the son of Morris A. Wessel, a pediatrician, and Irmgard R. Wessel, a clinical social worker. Wessel graduated from New Haven’s Richard C. Lee High School in 1971 and from Haverford College in 1975, where he majored in economics. In 2009, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in humane letters by Eureka College.

Wessel began his career as a reporter with his first newspaper, the Middletown, Connecticut Press in 1975. He joined the team at The Hartford Courant in 1977. He quit Hartford in the year 1980, to take one year as an Knight-Bagehot fellow in Business and Economics Journalism at Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism. He then moved in 1981 to The Boston Globe in 1981 and was employed at the end of 1983, as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal’s Boston bureau. He was transferred into The Washington, D.C. bureau in 1987. He was there for the entirety of his tenure with the WSJ and was only absent for an unspecified time as the newspaper’s Berlin bureau chief between 1999 and 2000.
Wessel has been awarded two Pulitzer Prizes in journalism. in 1984 The Boston Globe and seven members of its staff were awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Local Investigative Specialized Reporting. They cited an 1983 “series examining race relations in Boston, a notable exercise in public service that turned a searching gaze on some the city’s most honored institutions including The Globe itself”.
