David Niu is one of the most popular and richest Rugby League Player who was born on January 3, 1966 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. David Niumataiwalu, better known as David Niu (born 3 January 1966) is an American-Australian dual-code international rugby league as well as a the rugby union’s administrator, coach as well as a former participant. Considered to be one of the pioneers of the rugby league within the United States, he established the American National Rugby League (AMNRL) as which was the United States’ first domestic rugby league and the national governing body of the sport. He was later the president of AFL Global, an organization that promotes arena football across the globe.
It was in 1991 that Niu was introduced to his wife Donna Camac while on a St. George team retreat in Hawaii. He was released from the final year on his agreement for the Dragons and moved to her home town of Philadelphia and took the position of teacher for Glen Mills Schools. Glen Mills Schools, a reform school for youth who are court-referred with a talent for sports. He worked to establish the sport of rugby to the students which attracted the interest of American fanatic Mike Mayer. Niu as well as Mayer formed an U.S. national rugby league team to go for the 1992 Rugby League World Sevens in Sydney. After Mayer was gone, Niu continued to build the team for the national squad, taking them to international competitions , such those of 1995’s Emerging Nations Tournament as well as an unplanned trip to Australia in 1997.
During this time, Niu also played rugby union in the U.S. He was named to the United States national rugby union team, making eleven international appearances, including at the 1999 Rugby World Cup. In 2000 he became head coach of Philadelphia Whitemarsh RFC in the Rugby Super League, the highest level of rugby union in the United States.
In 2009 Niu was involved in a proposed American professional rugby league competition, the National Rugby League USA (NRLUS), though this failed to get off the ground. Niu was also heavily involved in planning the Atlantic Cup tournament, beginning in 2009, and in the United States being awarded the qualifying tournament for the final berth in the 2013 Rugby League World Cup.
Niu made the transition to professional league at the age of 1989. In 1990, he accepted to the St. George Dragons of the New South Wales Rugby League premiership (now the National Rugby League), the highest competition in Australia’s rugby league and an attacking halfback. He was a part of St. George for two seasons, playing in 19 games, scoring two tries and a field goal. As an former Dragons players, Niu has been outspoken about the club’s decision to move out of the Kogarah’s WIN Jubilee Oval. He then participated in the Villeneuve Leopards in France, and also played for Bradford Bulls and the Bramley as well as the Bradford Bulls in the United Kingdom before his retirement.

Niu played union rugby for St. George Rugby Union Club from 1984 until 1989, participating in over 250 first division matches. He also played for Sydney and in the New South Wales Waratahs and was a part of the Australian Barbarians and was captain of Australia’s Australian College and University teams from 1984 until 1988. In 1986, he was among three recipients of the Ken Catchpole Award. In 1987, he was awarded his place on the Australian national rugby union training team to play in training for the 1987 Rugby World Cup.
Niu was a player with his club, the St. George Rugby Union Club from 1984 until 1989 before transferring to the code of rugby league. His professional career in the league included two seasons playing for the St. George Dragons in the Australian New South Wales Rugby League (now the National Rugby League) from 1990 until 1991. His role was that of a halfback. In 1993, he relocating back to America. United States where he was active in promoting both codes. He was among the founding members of the United States national rugby league team and also played for the USA Eagles national rugby union team at the 1999 Rugby World Cup. In 1997, he created the tournament that later became the current AMNRL and served as the president from 1997 until 2013.
In 1997 Niu was one of the founders of Super League America, the first major attempt to organize a domestic rugby league competition in the United States, and served as the new league’s executive director. The organization managed the national team and launched a six-club domestic competition. On top of serving as head of Super League America, Niu was also player-coach for the Glen Mills Bulls (now the Aston Bulls), the most dominant team in the league. In 2000 Super League America reorganized as the United States Rugby League, and the following year it became the American National Rugby League.
