University of Denver honored the award of a scholarship to Carle and he started attending in the autumn of 2008. To ensure that he was an integral part of their team the director George Gwozdecky offered Carle a position as an assistant coach for the team for while they were students at Denver. The initial plan was an initial attempt to see whether Carle is still interested in the sport was eventually transformed into an official position. After graduation in 2012, Carle was hired by with the Green Bay Gamblers as an assistant coach, but returned to Denver just two years later, as an assistant coach under the new director of the team Jim Montgomery. Carle continued to coach Denver Pioneers during four consecutive years and helped the team take home in 2017 the National Championship, before he was appointed to replace Montgomery as head coach in 2018.

Originating from Alaska, Carle attended high school at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s High School in Faribault, Minnesota. After his success as a student at Shattuck, Carle was projected to be a 2nd-round selection for the 2008 NHL selection process. In the process of prepping for his 2009 NHL Entry Draft an abnormality was noticed at the NHL practice and, after passing examinations through Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic Carle was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is an expansion of the heart muscle. Although the genetic condition is not life-threatening, it has been proven to be the leading cause of sudden death among athletes. The diagnosis led Carle to quit hockey as a player, but despite his end of career, he was still selected for the Tampa Bay Lightning 203rd overall in the seventh round. The then-owner Oren Koules’s son was a student at Shattuck-Saint Mary’s in the same year when Carle and Oren instructed the general manager Jay Feaster to select Carle in honor of Carle’s tireless work.

In 2018-2019, Carle led the Denver Pioneers to the Frozen Four in his first season as head coach.
