David Aebischer (born February 7 1978) is an ex- Swiss professional ice hockey goalie that played for the National Hockey League with the Colorado Avalanche, Montreal Canadiens and Phoenix Coyotes. He was a part of 2001’s Stanley Cup champion Avalanche team being one of the few Swiss native to win this feat. Aebischer played in several seasons in his home Switzerland with HC Fribourg Gotteron, HC Lugano and the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers of the Nationalliga A.
Aebischer played in 26 games in his debut year with Colorado. Aebischer earned his NHL debut, and his first NHL start on the 18th of October of 2000 when he faced the Columbus Blue Jackets in Columbus for his first NHL win. On the 26th of October in 2000, in his second career appearance, Aebischer shut out the Chicago Blackhawks in Chicago for his first NHL shutout of his career. The season would be an extremely successful one and Roy was able to lead the Avalanche to win their 2nd Stanley Cup championship, defeating the New Jersey Devils in a seven-game final series. After winning, Aebischer made history as the only Swiss hockey player ever to be the winner of the Stanley Cup.
That summer, Montreal re-signed him to a one-year deal worth $1.9 million. He served as Cristobal Huet’s back-up for the 2006–07 season and posted a 13–12–3 record. The Canadiens failed to make the playoffs and Montreal opted not to re-sign Aebischer.
Aebischer returned to the Avalanche for the 2005–06 season. He was unable to duplicate his pre-lockout form and his inconsistent play led to his being traded to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for goaltender José Théodore on March 8, 2006, a day before the NHL trade deadline.
Aebischer was selected 161st overall by Colorado Avalanche in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He relocated back to North America in 1997 and played in the 1997-98 season of the ECHL initially playing with the Chesapeake Icebreakers and then with the Wheeling Nailers. The next two seasons playing for the Colorado’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate The Hershey Bears, with whom the team posted a 46-33-7 record. When the Avalanche traded backup goalie Marc Denis to the Columbus Blue Jackets in the summer of 2000, Aebischer became the full-time backup for goalie Patrick Roy.

As a youngster, Aebischer played in the 1992 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the group from Switzerland.
Aebischer has played for Switzerland in international competitions on numerous occasions. His first international competition was in 1997’s World Junior Ice Hockey Championships held by Switzerland. The Swiss placed 7th in the tournament. Aebischer returned as Switzerland’s primary goalie the following year in the 1998 World Juniors and led the team to the quarterfinals and on to a bronze medal final, beating the heavily favored Czech Republic in the bronze medal match. Aebischer has also represented Switzerland during the five IIHF World Championships and two Winter Olympic Games.
