Born in Warburg, Alberta, Hakstol was the head coach for the Sioux City Musketeers for four seasons. He also served as the head coach of the University of North Dakota men’s hockey team for 11 seasons. Hakstol was a player in the Fighting Sioux from 1989 to 1992, and was a part of the International Hockey League for five years prior to becoming a head coach. Hakstol was director of hockey for the Philadelphia Flyers from May 2015 until December 2018.
On the 17th of December, 2018 The Flyers were relieved of Hakstol as head coach after an unbeaten beginning to the 2018-19 season.

Dave Hakstol attended the University of North Dakota and played hockey between 1989 and 1992. He played in minor NHL hockey over five years, which included time in The Indianapolis Ice and Minnesota Moose. After he retired as an athlete, he made the move into coaching as a coach for the Sioux City Musketeers. He took over from the coach who was fired during their depressing 1996-97 campaign, then transformed the team and stayed until 2004. He was appointed an assistant coach at his former school North Dakota in 2000. He was promoted to the head coach. During his time as the head coach of North Dakota, He led North Dakota to an appearance in reaching the NCAA Frozen Four seven times. Hakstol was awarded conferences coach of the award in 2009 and in 2015. He was also the eight-time national finalist coach of the Year.
In May of 2015 the announcement was made that Hakstol will be Head Coach of the Philadelphia Flyers’ 19th head coach. Hakstol was the only head coach to move straight from NCAA into the NHL since 1982 (Bob Johnson who came from his time at the University of Wisconsin to the Calgary Flames). Hakstol got his first NHL win in the Flyers in the 3rd game in the league, winning 1-0 against The Florida Panthers.
On June 29, 2019, Hakstol was hired as assistant head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
