At the age 9, Dahl began working at the bakery of his family, which was established in 1955 by his dad James A. “Jim” Dahl in 1955. While working in the baker’s shop, Dahl created the idea of a cornmeal-crusted loaf that was named by him and his brother “Dave’s Killer Bread” and was the foundation of the brand’s new name. After the initial successes in local markets for farmers and stores, they began selling the products of the company. By 2013 the business employed over 300 workers (approximately 1/3 of them were former felons) within its corporate headquarters located situated in Milwaukie, Oregon. In August of 2015, Dave’s Killer Bread was bought from Flowers Foods for $275 million.
In November of 2013, Dahl suffered a mental health issue, and Dahl was reported to have collided with three police cars, causing three officers to the hospital and fighting deputies while they detained Dahl. On October 14, 2014 following having been diagnosed as bipolar Dahl was found guilty , with the exception of for insanity in two counts of assault in the third degree and one count of illegal use of firearms by the Washington County judge, who put him under the supervision under the State’s Psychiatric Security Review Board. The Board was established in January of 2015. Dahl received conditional release under Board supervision, and was subject to restrictions on driving and entering bars.

Dave Dahl (born January 12 1963) is an American businessman, best known for his role in co-founding Dave’s Killer Bread. Prior to this Dave Dahl was sentenced to over fifteen years of prison time for various crimes, including drug distribution and burglary, armed robbery and assault.
When he was in 1987, Dahl got his first stint in prison following the burglary of the house of a friend. Dahl was back at Bakery in the year 1989, after accepting an offer to work to work with his twin brother Glenn but then resigned and relocated to Massachusetts and was sentenced to longer in prison for an armed burglary. The year 1997 saw Dahl got arrested once more at Portland, Oregon, after which he was detained in the Snake River Correctional Institution near Ontario, Oregon. The year 2001 was the first time he entered in a program for treatment of addiction and a vocational course in computer- aided design and drafting, which he was able to impart to others inmates after he had a great time at the class. Dahl received his release from jail on the 27th, 2004, following which he was reunited with his brother Glenn at the bakery of the family on a third occasion.
In 2016, Dahl started an organization known as Discover African Art, for which he opened a flagship showroom in Clackamas, Oregon and a boutique in Portland’s Pearl District the following year. In June 2017, the organization contributed to grain shipments bound for a village in Mali.
