In the Mountaineers’ opening game of the Big East Tournament, West Virginia defeated Cincinnati with help from Butler, who banked in the game-winning three-pointer with no time left to win 54–51. In the following 53–51 victory over Notre Dame in the semifinals, Butler scored 24 points.
