Darrell Rankin is one of the most popular and richest Activist who was born on February 14, 1957 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Darrell T. Rankin (born on 14 February 1957) is a Canadian peace activist, and ex- communist politician. He was the head in the Communist Party of Canada – Ontario (CPC-O) in 1995. He also served as the leader of his own party, the Communist Party of Canada – Manitoba (CPC-M) from 1996 to the year 2019. His co-leader, Cheryl-Anne Car was also a member of The Communist Party. Rankin was removed from the Party in the year 2019.
Rankin relocated into Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1995 after his participation in the Ontario election. It was the Communist Party of Canada – Manitoba was in need of an effective leader for a number of years and Rankin was appointed the provincial organizer of the party prior to the year had ended. He organized the party’s 75th anniversary celebration in the beginning of 1996 and was elected as the party’s leader at the end of 1996. He was later the party’s leader during the 2003, 1999 and the 2007 provincial elections.
Rankin was appointed as interim leader of the Communist Party of Canada – Ontario in April 1995, and led the party in the 1995 provincial election. The national party had fallen to only 500 members in this period, and the Ontario party ran a low-profile campaign with only five candidates and an $8,000 budget. Rankin challenged New Democratic Party Premier Bob Rae in York South, and focused on issues such as health, education, social programs and full employment.
Rankin is a founding member of Peace Alliance Winnipeg and a member of the No War Coalition (Manitoba). He helped organize protests against the 1999 Kosovo Conflict, the 2001 NATO invasion of Afghanistan and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He wrote an article for the People’s Voice, the newspaper of the Communist Party, supporting Slobodan Milošević’s policies in Kosovo in order to protect Serbians from Albanians in the region whom Rankin labelled as “Fascists.” He continued to write occasional articles for People’s Voice. In November 2007, he organized a party at Winnipeg’s Ukrainian Labour Temple to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Russian Revolution.
In 1992, a majority participants in the Communist Party’s annual convention decided to abandon Marxism and Leninism and instead pursue a socialist alternative. Rankin was part of the minority group headed by Miguel Figueroa that opposed the change and was able to continue to stand by the old-fashioned communist ideology. The party broke up, while the minorities was awarded the right to use be able to use the Communist Party name through an out-of-court settlement.

Rankin (actual the family’s name Renka, who is of Ukrainian ethnicity) is a native of and was raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and was involved in the radical left political scene by early protest against and opposition to the Vietnam War. His grandparents were involved in the Communist Party of Canada, which Rankin joined in 1978. He has an undergraduate diploma from the Faculty of Politics Science of The University of Alberta.
He was a resident of Ottawa, Ontario from 1983 until 1995. He was a key leader within his role in the Canadian Peace Alliance and the Ottawa Disarmament Coalition. An article in the newspaper of 1986 indicated that he was an articling lawyer, however it’s not known whether he continued to work in this way. He was involved in demonstrations against the Gulf War in 1991.
In June 1995, Rankin contributed an article entitled “Observations on the Setbacks to Socialism” to the Communist Party discussion journal The Spark! (not to be confused with the Trotskyist organization of the same name). The piece examined then-recent events in Eastern Europe, including the fall of the Soviet Union.
