Daphne Berdahl was born on June 14, 1964 in Freiburg, Germany, to Margaret and Robert Berdahl, a scholar of German History and well-known former chancellor of Berkeley. Berdahl was born in Oregon and was a student at Oberlin College for her undergraduate degree, and then earned her PhD at the University of Chicago. She was appointed for two years as a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard then joined an academic faculty of the University of Minnesota, where she was employed from 1997 until 2007, as an assistant professor, and later as an Associate Professor of Anthropology.

An essay collection by her was published in her honor through Indiana University Press in 2010, “On the Social Life of Postsocialism: Memory, Consumption, Germany” by Daphne Berdahl, edited with an introduction by Matti Bunzl, introduction by Michael Herzfeld.

Berdahl got married to John N. Baldwin in 1990. The couple were blessed with twin daughters. On the 5th of October 2007 Berdahl passed away following an eight-year battle for breast cancer. A fellowship for graduate students was established by the University of Minnesota in her in her memory.
