In the year 2011 Michel moved from the United States to Central America Belize to record with The Garifuna Collective, an Afro-Amerindian cultural group, for their record Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me. The album was awarded an Juno Award nomination in the world music category, as well as an all-sold-out summer tour across North America with The Garifuna Collective as his group. In June 2013 the album was selected for the Polaris Music Prize. Polaris Music Prize and released in Canada through Six Shooter Records and worldwide on Cumbancha Records.
