Dana Louise Priest (born May 23rd 1957) is an American journalist, writer , and educator. She worked for over 30 years at The Washington Post and became the third John S. and James L. Knight Chair in Public Affairs Journalism at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism in 2014. Prior to becoming a full-time investigative reporter for The Post, Priest specialized in intelligence reporting. She wrote a number of reports about”the” U.S. “War on terror” and served as the newspaper’s Pentagon reporter. In 2006, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Beat Reporting with a focus on “her persevering, meticulous reportage on the hidden “black sites” prisons and other controversial features of the government’s counter-terrorism campaign.” The Washington Post won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service by citing the efforts of journalists Priest as well as Anne Hull and photographer Michel du Cille “exposing mistreatment of wounded veterans at Walter Reed Hospital, evoking a national outcry and producing reforms by federal officials.”

The article is titled “CIA Holds Terror Suspects in Secret Prisons” The article, which was published in The Washington Post above the fold on November 2, 2005 claims that there are secret extraterritorial, CIA interrogation centers. The article ignited a global discussion about the existence of these “black sites.” The article brought up-to-date revelations from one year ago of Priest along with investigative reporter Joe Stephens. Priest’s piece reveals that, in addition to the more than 750 Guantanamo Bay detainees who were in military detention The CIA kept around 30 senior members of al Qaeda and Taliban leadership as well as around 100 foot soldiers at their own facilities across the globe. She also noted that several ex-members of the Soviet Bloc countries had allowed the CIA to establish interrogation facilities in their territories.

The Post reported on April 21, 2006, that a CIA employee, Mary O. McCarthy, was fired for allegedly leaking classified information to Priest and other journalists. The allegation has been disputed by McCarthy and by the Post.
