Daniel Joseph Snyder (February 23 1978 – October 5 2005) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He was a centre for the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Atlanta Thrashers. After a single vehicle accident that involved him as the driver, Snyder was injured and went into a coma of. He passed away six days later from the septic shock.

On the 29th of September 2003 Snyder sustained serious injuries following an accident in the Ferrari 360 Modena, being driven by his colleague and friend Dany Heatley crashed. Heatley had been driving at speeds of between 55 to 82 mph in a speed zone of 35 MPH lost control and crashed into a brick wall and an iron fence. Both drivers were ejected from the vehicle, and it was divided in half due to forces of collision. Snyder had surgery to repair an injury to the skull that had been depressed. He was in a state of coma. Six days later , on Oct. 5, the patient went into septic shock, and then died without regaining consciousness. Heatley was indicted for vehicular homicide in the aftermath of the accident and could have been as long as 15 years of prison. He pleaded guilty to second degree vehicular homicide for driving too speedily for the conditions, failing to keep a lane clear, and speeding. The judge sentenced him to probation for three years and was ordered to deliver 150 presentations about risks of driving too fast and to pay $25,000 to Fulton County for the cost of conducting an investigation into the accident. The lower sentence was in part due to Snyder’s parents’ willingness to forgive Heatley for the crash as well as their desire to should not be sentenced to prison and the judge’s view that Heatley is in prison for a reason that is not beneficial for the community.

In 2003, plans for a new sports complex in Elmira were completed with a projected completion date in 2017. Snyder felt that the project needed to be completed much quicker and wanted to help make it happen sooner. After his death the Dan Snyder Memorial Foundation contributed $750,000 to the project which opened in 2009. The main arena houses the Sugar Kings and was named the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena. The Atlanta Thrashers held a practice and promotional session in the arena on October 18, 2009.

The next season Atlanta set aside the whole season for Snyder and Heatley and honored Snyder by wearing a patch with his number 37 and applying the same logo to the boards. Snyder was also honored with the establishment of the Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was to be distributed to three recipients in the Elmira region. The 31st of December, 2003 the Thrashers faced against the Detroit Red Wings; during the game, both teams wore the patch that commemorated the game. After the game, it was announced that the NHLPA auctioned off worn-out jerseys, with the proceeds going to scholarships. The auction brought in $56,029. It was the Chicago Wolves paid tribute to Snyder by naming the award they present to community members as the Dan Snyder Man of the Year Award The OHL changed the name of the Humanitarian of the Year trophy in honor of his memory, making it known as the Dan Snyder Memorial Trophy.

During the 2006–07 NHL season, Snyder’s parents, Graham and LuAnn Snyder, traveled across North America in an RV attending NHL games and speaking at engagements to raise awareness for the Dan Snyder Memorial Foundation, a foundation that provides four college scholarships a year and helps raise money for the Elmira recreation center.
