Daniel Wayne Hooper (born December 16th 1976) is an American particle physicist, cosmologist, and cosmologist who specializes in the fields that deal with cosmic rays and dark matter and neutrino Astrophysics. He is a Senior Scientist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and an Associate Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago.

Hooper earned his PhD in Physics in 2003 at the University of Wisconsin, under the direction by Francis Halzen. He was a postdoctoral research fellow in the University of Oxford between 2003 until 2005, and was his position was as the David Schramm Fellow at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) between 2005 and 2007. He is currently an Associate Scientist with Fermilab as well as an associate professor in the Astronomy and Astrophysics Department at the University of Chicago. Additionally, he is a part of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics (KICP) located at the University of Chicago. Since 2017, he’s been Fermilab’s head of the Theoretical Astrophysics Group.

Hooper has co-authored or written more than 200 articles that have been published in peer-reviewed journals of science. The most frequently cited of these papers is the 2005 review of the dark matter (co-authored by Gianfranco Bertone and Joseph Silk), as in a set of articles composed from 2009 to 2014 about the Fermi Space Telescope’s Galactic Center excess and its potential connection to the destruction of dark matter. In 2017, he was chosen to become a fellow in the American Physical Society, “For pursuing the identity of dark matter by combining careful analysis of observational data with theoretical ideas from both particle physics and astrophysics.”

Hooper is the author of several books, including Dark Cosmos: In Search of our Universe’s Missing Mass and Energy (2006), Nature’s Blueprint: Supersymmetry and the Search for a Unified Theory of Matter and Force (2008), and At the Edge of Time: Exploring the Mysteries of Our Universe’s First Seconds (2019).
