His composition teachers include Michael Daugherty, Augusta Read Thomas, and Pulitzer Prize winners William Bolcom, Christopher Rouse, and Joseph Schwantner.

He is influenced by magic realism, impressionism, and postminimalism, and is one of the preeminent composer- performers of his generation.
