Curtis Sanford (born October 5 1979) is an Canadian former professional goalie for ice hockey who played his last game with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He played previously in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the St. Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, and Columbus Blue Jackets.

In the lead-up to the 2008-09 season Sanford as well as the Canucks organized a contest that asked fans to submit their artwork to be used as a mask. The contest was designed to coincide with his new name of “The Big C.S.” The nickname Sanford has “the Sandman”, inspired his earlier mask designs. After Luongo was injured in the groin in the latter part of November, Sanford assumed the starting position. But, Sanford himself became prone to injury and was afflicted with back spasms during a game in the Columbus Blue Jackets on December 1st, 2008, prior to being put on injured reserve for an injury to the groin the following day, December 30. After the purchase by Jason LaBarbera and the imminent return of Luongo, Sanford was placed on waivers by the Canucks on January 14th, 2009. After clearing waivers, he got assigned by the Manitoba Moose of the AHL which he played for the remainder of the season.

Sanford signed a one-year contract and spent the 2011–12 season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, appearing in 36 games. Following the season, he agreed to terms on a contract with Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl; Lokomotiv were still rebuilding after losing its entire team in the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash.

At the conclusion of his third season with Lokomotiv, Sanford announced his retirement from professional hockey on March 7, 2015.

Sanford was a free agent during the off-season and on July 3rd 2007 The Vancouver Canucks signed him to an one-year contract worth $600,000 to assist goalie Roberto Luongo. Sanford played in 16 games during the 2007-08 season as a substitute for Luongo mostly due to his rib injury that occurred in December. He posted an 2.83 GAA, he was signed to a new one-year contract with a value of $650,000 from the Canucks on July 3 in 2008.

Sanford was not drafted out of junior. Sanford was granted a free-agent contract to the St. Louis Blues after his final season playing for the Platers in 2000. He was a part of the team’s first five seasons playing in their farm program between his team the Peoria Rivermen in the ECHL and the Worcester IceCats of the American Hockey League (AHL). Sanford was called up to the Blues during the 2002-03 hockey season due to injuries to goalie Fred Brathwaite and Brent Johnson in October. Sanford was a part of his first game , when fellow rookie selection Reinhard Divis was also struck in the opening period on the 17th of October on the 2002 season with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Sanford made 12 saves in relief during the 7-1 win for the Blues. Sanford briefly won his place in the starting lineup in lack of Blues goalie of the past before being injured himself, a high ankle sprain on the 24th of October, in a game against Edmonton Oilers. Sanford was able to return to the starting line-up for several games, and had 5-1 records and an 1.96 GAA in his first period in the Blues before returning to Worcester.

The 2005 and 2006 seasons, Sanford appeared poised to serve as a backup to the recently bought Patrick Lalime. But, when Lalime was struggling, Sanford seized the starting position and was enjoying an outstanding season until he was forced to retire due to an injured ACL at his left knee during March. Prior to missing the rest of the season Sanford recorded a 13-13-5 mark with an average of 2.66 GAA (GAA) in addition to a .908 saving percentage. The Blues were last in the standings this year. After recovering from his knee injuries, Sanford returned the next season and fought Manny Legace for the starting position. Then, in November of that year, Sanford went down for a number of games due to the strain to his groin. He injured his groin again in December and was unable to play for an extended amount of time. Sanford returned to finish the season, but his stats decrease to an 8-12-5 mark with an average of 3.18 GAA and .888 save percentage.

In the off-season, Sanford signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Montreal Canadiens on July 20, 2009, for the 2009–10 season. With both Jaroslav Halák and Carey Price minding net, Sanford was assigned to the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate, the Hamilton Bulldogs. After a successful season with the Bulldogs, he signed a one-year extension.
