Leschyshyn was selected by the Quebec Nordiques in the first round (third overall) in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. He was a member of the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise over periods of nine seasons. He won the Stanley Cup in 1996 with Colorado. After winning the Stanley Cup, Curtis was traded to the Washington Capitals with Chris Simon in exchange for Keith Jones and a 1st round selection. After only two games after which he became a trade partner for the Hartford Whalers for Andrei Nikolishin on the 9th of November in 1996.
After the conclusion of that season The Whalers were renamed known as the Carolina Hurricanes, for whom Leschyshyn was a player for the next three seasons, before being drafted during the draft for expansion from the Minnesota Wild on June 23 in 2000. Leschyshyn began the year 2000-2001 with the Wild before being transferred with the Ottawa Senators for a 3rd round selection (Stephane Veilleux) on March 13th, 2001. After three seasons as a regular on the Senators defense, Leschyshyn was signed by Colorado (his hometown of choice) following his participation in the 2005 NHL Lockout on August 17 in 2005. He returned to Colorado Avalanche was not long-lasting as he resigned before the 2005-06 season began on October 3, 2005.
Leschyshyn returned to the Avalanche organization as a professional scout prior to the 2018–19 season.
