He was slated to be dismissed by the Cardinals team prior to the beginning of the 1987 campaign, however, he decided to come back to play a final season despite warnings from doctors regarding his knee. He was one of those who crossed the line of the picket at the time of the 1987 NFL strike. In 1987, he participated at least 10 matches, playing nine games and registering six sacks. He resigned at the conclusion of the season.
Greer was the very first pick by the Cardinals in the 1980 NFL Draft. He was absent for some games during his debut season following an injury to the head and finished the season on injured reserve following a thumb injury during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He had 30 sacks during 1983-84, and 37.5 during an entire 41 games of the strike-shortened 1982 season , and from 1983 until 1985, his total was second-highest of the National Football League for that time period, just behind Dexter Manley of the Washington Redskins. Greer recorded 4.5 Sacks in the last match of the year against Philadelphia Eagles. Greer played in the last five games of the 1985 season, with an injury to his knee and was the team’s leader in sacks for the first six seasons in the league.

Curtis Greer (born November 10 in 1957) is an ex- American footballer. He played in the NCAA football tournament as a defensive tackle at the University of Michigan from 1976 until 1979. Greer was picked as a player by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round (sixth overall selection) in the year 1980 NFL Draft. At 6’4″ and weighing 256 pounds., Greer played seven seasons, mostly as a defensive lineman within the National Football League (NFL) for the Cardinals between 1980 until 1987. Greer was a top rusher in the early 80s prior to his career being cut short due to knee issues, resulting in his absence for all of 1986.
Greer is enrolled at the University of Michigan in 1975 and played in the college game as a defensive lineman for Bo Schembechler’s Michigan Wolverines football teams from 1976 until 1979. He was contemplating attending Michigan State University, but decided to join a few classmates from high school classmates on at the University of Michigan. He was a defensive lineman at Michigan. Greer made the 1979 All-America selection. Greer had eleven sacks in his sophomore and junior seasons. He established the Michigan record for tackles for losses during a season (21) and in his career (48). Two times, he was named a All-Big Ten conference selection (1978 and 1979) and was instrumental in leading his team of Wolverines towards three league championships as well as the bowl game in four occasions.
