in 2003 Shipley was recruited by his former Padres managers Larry Lucchino and Theo Epstein to the Boston Red Sox, where he was appointed Special Assistant to General Manager of player development and international scouting. He was promoted to vice president during 2006 and was promoted to senior vice- president, international scouting in 2009. In February of 2011, Shipley was promoted again in the form of the senior vice-president, international scouting and player personnel. However, just a few months after Epstein quit his position with the Red Sox for the Chicago Cubs in October of 2011, Shipley was dismissed in an overhaul of the Boston front office, under the team’s new director of operations, Ben Cherington.
The post-playing career of Shipley began in 2000, as he worked as an roving minor league baserunning and infield coach to the Montreal Expos. Then, he went back to the Padres as an official scout working for Towers between 2001 and 2002.
