He entered the professional coach ranks back in the year 2007 when Clouston became a member of his team the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League (AHL). Clouston was promoted to head coach for Ottawa Senators Ottawa Senators on February 2 2009, following the dismissal from Craig Hartsburg. Although initially appointed the interim coach of Ottawa Clouston’s initial success was recognized and the club granted him an extension of two years on April 8th 2009. He was the eighth player to be the head coach in the current Senators history.
On June 14, 2011, the Senators announced former Detroit Red Wings assistant coach Paul MacLean as Clouston’s successor.
With Ottawa, Clouston had attempted to change the Senators’ game plan to be more of an attacking one, creating turnovers and generating offense as opposed to the defence-first system which Hartsburg had attempted to utilize. Clouston coached the Senators to a somewhat successful 2009-10 season, finishing with 44 wins and 94 points and a berth in the Stanley Cup playoffs. The team ultimately lost in the first round to the Pittsburgh Penguins. A disappointing 2010-11 season saw Ottawa, beset by injuries to key players Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza and erratic goaltending, languish in last place of the Eastern Conference standings for several weeks. General Manager Bryan Murray (ice hockey) made a flurry of midseason trades and promoted many minor leaguers for tryouts. The Senators played better as the season wound down, but finished out of the playoffs. Clouston was relieved of his duties by GM Bryan Murray on April 9, 2011.
Clouston’s first coaching role was an assistant coach for his team the Powell River Paper Kings of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League during 1994-95. He was then the director of operations and coach for the Grande Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. While with the Storm the team recorded an .627 win percentage (143-82-15) and He was named AJHL head coach of the season in 1995-96. He joined the team of the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 1999 as an assistant coach. In 2002, in the summer of 2002 he was promoted to the head coach position at the Ice and he remained there for five years, accumulating an .655 win percentage (209-110-20-21). The team’s most successful season under his guidance was in 2004-05, when the club reached the Western Conference final. Clouston was also an assistant head coach at Hockey Canada during his junior coaching career, including an assistant coach for the national team of under-18s in 2005 Junior World Cup gold medalists and as the head coach for the team in 2006 who brought home the gold medal.

Cory Clouston (/’ K l u: Cory Clouston (/’ k l u: born on 19 September 1969) is an ice hockey trainer, who has most recently been the head coach for the Kolner Haie of the DEL. He previously was the director of hockey for the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL), the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League (AHL), the Prince Albert Raiders, the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League.
Born to Viking, Alberta, Clouston was a student at his time at the University of Alberta from 1989-1993 where he graduated with an undergraduate degree in the field of recreation and administration. He was a hockey player for the university’s Golden Bears team and was part of 1991-1992’s Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship team.
On August 3, 2011, Clouston was named Head Coach of the Brandon Wheat Kings, replacing Kelly McCrimmon, who stepped aside to focus on his duties as GM.
