Chavous was picked to his team the Arizona Cardinals in the second round (33rd overall) in the 1998 NFL Draft. In his first season, Chavous appeared in 16 games and recorded 2 interceptions and 28 tackles, the first game being against the Kansas City Chiefs on November 30. He participated in 15 games, recording 40 tackles and an interception. In the following year, he had 48 tackles and had one interception. In his final season as a player for the Cardinals, Chavous made 74 tackles and had one interception.

He signed with the Detroit Lions on December 29. The year 2003 was the time he recorded an impressive 86 tackles, with a record- high eight interceptions, and one touchdown. His performance that year brought him to 2004’s Pro Bowl. In the following season the player recorded an 81-tack and had one interception. His final year as a player for the Vikings, Chavous started all 16 games for the fourth consecutive season with 71 tackles with two interceptions.

On February 13, 2009, Chavous was released by the Rams.
