Colleen Kay Sostorics (born December 17th 1979, in Kennedy, Saskatchewan) is a Canadian retired women’s ice hockey defensive player. She has been a regular player for Canada on the international stage and has won three Olympic gold medals (2002 in Turin as well as the year 2006, in Salt Lake City, and 2010 in Vancouver). In the Women’s World Championships, Sostorics has led Canada to win three gold as well as three silver as well during the 4 Nations Cup, she has taken home five gold medals as well as a silver medal. In addition to playing for Canada she is competing in the club arena with The Calgary Oval X-Treme who now are part of the Western Women’s Hockey League (WWHL).
The year 1999 was the one when Sostorics became the first player to ever make her Team Canada debut on the National Under-22 Team in the 1999 Christmas Cup, winning a gold medal. In the years 2000 and 2001 she continued to play in the Under-22 team and won Gold medals from the Nations Cup tournament both years. She was captain of the team in 2001-2000 season. Her performances at the U-22 level was enough to get her a place on the senior women’s national team at the 2001 World Women’s Hockey Championship. In this event she scored two goals and also assisted as Canada took home their gold trophy.
Her parents’ names are Lanny and Jean. She has one brother, Mark. After winning a gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics, her hometown of Kennedy named a street after her. She convocated with a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Calgary in 2004.
In 2002, Sostorics was named to Canada’s team for the 2002 Winter Olympics, held in Salt Lake City, Utah. During the tournament, she contributed two assists as Canada took the gold medal. In 2004 and 2005, she also played at the World Championships, winning gold and silver medals respectively.
After she had completed her minor hockey program in Saskatchewan and then accepting an invitation to Calgary to study at Calgary University of Calgary, where she played on an women’s hockey squad. Following the 1997-98 season, Sostorics was named to the All-Star Team after the Canada West Championship Tournament. Calgary won the bronze medal in the tournament. Calgary was awarded this honor in 1998 and 1999. Canada West Championship Tournament. Calgary took home Silver in the Canada West Tournament in 1998-99. Alongside the Canada West distinction, Sostorics was named a Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union (CIAU) All-Canadian after both the 1998-99 and 1997-98 seasons. Following 1998-99 Canada West year, Sostorics was named a Canada West Second All-Star on the Team.

Colleen Sostorics started with hockey while in Kennedy, Saskatchewan, on the local teams for boys up to the age of 17. She was 17 when she was captain of the team of boys in the Bantam division.
