Shields began the career of his in North America and played for Cleveland Jr. Barons in the NAHL for two seasons between 1998 and 2000. Shields was selected as a sixth-rounder by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Shields decided to attend and play at the University of Maine for three seasons. He finished as the top scorer of the 2003-04 season.
In the 2004-05 season, Shields played with San Diego Gulls, Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies and Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL with a total of 35 points across 62 games. In 2005-06, Shields moved back to his home in the United Kingdom for a spell with the Belfast Giants of the EIHL and played alongside the former NHL superstar Theoren Fleury. In 2006-07, he returned to the ECHL and scored 43 points over five games for the Fresno Falcons and Idaho Steelheads. Shields was a star in 2007-08 with his team, the Newcastle Vipers of the EIHL with 73 points scored in five games. The result was an agreement for two years for Belfast Giants. Belfast Giants. Shields was Captain of the Giants and was the replacement for George Awada, who was exiled due to injuries.
He announced his retirement effective the end of the 2018–19 season on 26 March 2019.
