Reiss was detained in Tehran Airport on 1 July 2009, on her way back for France by Beirut. Iranian authorities claimed that Reiss snapped photos during the 2009 Iranian protests at the 2009 elections in Isfahan and sent them via email to a person she knew and this was possible spying against the Islamic Republic in the eyes of Iranian prosecutor. The arrest news was not made public for several days, and during that the French government was unsuccessful in trying to secure her release.
Clotilde Reiss was freed on Sunday 16 May 2010 after active diplomatic talks between Brazilian president, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, and Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Another source says it was the efforts of Turkey’s foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu who secured the release of Clotilde Reiss She arrived in Paris on Sunday the 16 May 2010 at around one o’clock and was received at the Élysée by president Nicolas Sarkozy. In a statement, she thanked her supporters and the president, “who proclaimed my innocence as soon as I was arrested.”
As it became clear that Iran was planning to put Reiss in the court officials at the top levels in the French government acted publicly to defend her. French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner called the charges against Reiss “absurd” and President Nicolas Sarkozy dismissed the charges in the same breath as “pure fantasy”. She was met by ambassador to France at Tehran, Bernard Poletti, on July 9, 2009.

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Iran made a public statement indicating his government’s willingness to free Reiss however, he clarified that her release was contingent of the “approach and the behavior of French official. He refused to go into further on what he was expecting of his French government, but said that “they are aware of what they should do.” France has stated that Iran attempts to pressure Paris to release an Iranian agent who is in jail within France for the murder in 1991 of the exiled former premier as a condition for Reiss’s release which they have firmly opposed.
The trial started in Tehran on August 8, 2009, and was held at the same with Nazak Afshar an employee of French-Iranian at the French Embassy, and Hossein Rassam the Iranian worker at the British Embassy. It was reported that the Swedish presidency in the European Union expressed concern over the trial and demanded the prisoners be released immediately and said, “The Presidency reiterates that actions against one EU country–citizen or embassy staff–is considered an action against all of EU, and will be treated accordingly.” She was granted bail and remained at the French Embassy, but was unable for her to travel out of the country in the midst of the conclusion of the trial.
Several days before her liberation, on 5 May 2010, a French court refused the extradition of Majid Kakavand, accused by the US of illegally procuring US and European high tech components for Iran, to the US and set him free. The French government denies that the two affairs are linked though an August 2009 cable of the US Embassy in Paris released by Wikileaks confirms that at one point the Iranian government proposed a trade regarding Kakavand and Reiss, which the French government says to have refused.
