Holmes was selected to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft out of Slocomb High School in Slocomb, Alabama. Holmes was signed by Pittsburgh Pirates at $1.2 million, but he renounced any commitments to playing baseball in college in the NCAA Division at Auburn University.

Holmes made his debut on the professional stage at the end of 2012 playing for The State College Spikes and spent the entire season in that team and was 5-3 with an 2.28 ERA in 13 starts. Holmes played 2013 for the West Virginia Power where he was 5-6 and an 4.08 ERA in 26 games (25 starts). He was undergoing Tommy John Surgery in 2014 and was unable to play for the rest of the season. He was back in 2015 and pitched three rehab starts for his Gulf Coast League Pirates before being assigned to the Bradenton Marauders. In six appearances for Bradenton the Marauders, Holmes knocked out 16 batters over 23 innings. He also posted an 2.74 ERA. Holmes played in 2016 for an organization called the Altoona Curve where he compiled an 11-9 record and an 4.22 ERA in 26 starts.
