Claus Lundekvam is one of the most popular and richest Norwegian footballer who was born on February 22, 1973 in Austevoll, Norway. Claus Lundekvam (Norwegian pronunciation: [‘klaeus ‘ ‘lun’:@kvam] ; born on February 22, 1973) is a former Norwegian footballer who played the majority of his time at English team Southampton. He was a player in the 2003 FA Cup Final for Southampton during the 2003 FA Cup Final against Arsenal. Lundekvam was named a 40-time player while playing for Norway.

He only scored two goals in the course of his Saints career. His first goal was scored in a match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 3 April 2004, in a 4-1 victory and the second came with Cardiff in 2006, both teams being under the direction of the former Saints director Dave Jones.

He later had problems with drink and drug abuse. He quoted “I would drink two litres of hard liquor and do between five and ten grams of cocaine every day.” In July 2012, Lundekvam claimed that he, team-mates and opposing captains were involved in betting fraud. “We could make deals with the opposing captain about, for example, betting on the first throw, the first corner, who started with the ball, a yellow card or a penalty. Those were the sorts of thing we had influence over.” These allegations were later denied by Lundekvam’s former team-mate and captain, Francis Benali.

The 2002-03 season, Lundekvam played a role to Southampton’s finest year since 1980 which saw them finish 8th in the Premier League and reached the FA Cup final, where they were only a fraction away from missing the trophy as they lost 1-0 against Arsenal. It was under the direction of Gordon Strachan, who famously laughed when Lundekvam was injured while stretching out during an encounter in the 2003-04 season against Leicester City in the 2003-04 season, claiming that the player “didn’t have a clue” whether the player was awake because “that’s what he’s always like”. [1]

Originating from Austevoll, Norway, he was a part of Brann as a young player, with his first senior appearance being made in 1993. He eventually earned an established spot as a central defender, but was transferred to English club Southampton in the fall of 1996. He was the first choice captain for a few years.

Lundekvam was a debutant in Norway in the month of November 1995 however, he didn’t be an official until 2002. He was named 40 times, scoring two times. His first goal for Norway in 2002, with Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2002 was the 1000th goal in his career with the Norwegian Norway national side.

Lundekvam remained at Southampton after their relegation from the FA Premier League in 2005. He went off injured after five minutes of the first game of the 2006–07 season, away to Derby County on 6 August 2006 (being replaced in the centre of defence by Chris Baird) and missed the first two months of the season. He then enjoyed a long run in the team before another injury in March put him out for another month. In the game at St Mary’s against Southend United on 6 May 2007, he fell awkwardly sustaining a serious ankle injury which put him out of action. On 18 March 2008 it was announced that his injury was such that his playing career was over.
