After completing his Ph.D. (1978) he was employed for a year at ONERA as part of the military. Then he was appointed by CNRS in the department of Chemistry (January 1st and January 1, 1980). In 1982, he moved to Sweden for as a postdoc for two years within the laboratory under Dr. Carl-Ivar Branden, a pioneer in the field of protein crystallography. While there, he helped create the TOM option within the FRODO software, creating an automated docking of protein-ligands using a flexible software. He also was a part of various studies on protein crystallography as well as modeling. After Sweden returned, he went to France to pursue the rather new discipline of structural biology, being part of the CRMC2 lab in Marseille at the Luminy Campus (Marseille University of Science). The group was there for four years, and also developed the first molecular graphics software the TURBO-FRODO. Then he joined the group of protein crystallography as it moved into The Marseille North University Department. It was in the North University Department that he headed his first team at the LCCMB laboratory (Laboratory of Crystallography as well as the Crystallization of Biomolecular Macromolecules) and this became one of the major aspects of his career. As director, he moved from 1995 on the campus that was founded by Joseph Aiguier, where LCCMB was transformed into AFMB (Architecture and Function of Macromolecules Biologiques). He resigned as director of AFMB in the year 2004 with AFMB being relocated onto its current location on the Luminy Campus in 2005. Since 2008 he is Head of Marseille-Nice Genopole.
– Expert at the Directorate of International Research at CNRS (1998–2000).
