Chris Welp is one of the most popular and richest German basketball player who was born on January 2, 1964 in Delmenhorst, Lower Saxony, Germany. Christian Ansgar Welp (January 2 1964 – March 1 2015) was a German professional basketball player. In his professional career at the time, he weighed 213 centimeters (7 feet 0 inches) and 111 kg (245 pounds) center. He was a three-time player as a player in the NBA. He was the MVP of the 1993 EuroBasket.

He was traded by the 76ers together alongside Maurice Cheeks and David Wingate to the San Antonio Spurs, in exchange for Johnny Dawkins and Jay Vincent during the off-season in 1989.

Welp won the gold medal at the EuroBasket 1993, as a player of the senior German national team. He scored the decisive last points in the tournament’s final. He was voted MVP of that tournament.

He also played with the Italian league club Viola Reggio Calabria, during the 1998–99 season.

He was only used sparingly by the Spurs and was transferred for the Golden State Warriors, in exchange for Uwe Blab (another German-born NBA center) during the deadline for trades, in 1990-91 NBA season. After playing a few games for the Warriors the team, his NBA career came to an end.

Welp was the highest scoring player throughout Washington Huskies history, as a player in the NCAA basketball tournament. The Huskies scored 2,073 point for Huskies and was three-time All-Pac-10 Conference selection. Welp was named the Pac-10 player of the Year in 1986. He also was instrumental in leading the Huskies to consecutive regular-season conference championships. Welp was admitted into the Husky Hall of Fame, in 2001.

Welp was selected 16th overall during the National Basketball Association (NBA)’s 1987 Draft and was selected with the Philadelphia 76ers, and he was a three-year player with the NBA. He was injured in December of 1987 when he fell onto a wet court in Chicago on the night following the conclusion of a Blackhawks hockey match. Welp was able to recall, “There was condensation on the floor, and the ball boys were mopping the floor the whole game,” and the injury “was so bad that my knee was never able to return to the same level as it was prior to. But no excuses.”

From 1990 to 1996, Welp played in Germany, with Bayer Leverkusen, with which he won six German national league championships and three German Cups. For the 1996–97 season, Welp played with the Greek League club Olympiacos, winning the EuroLeague title with them (and also the Triple Crown). In the 1997–98 season, he played with the German league club Alba Berlin.
