Snitko although he was birthed in Hackensack, New Jersey, was raised at Anaheim, California. He was a student at Canyon High School where he was a part of both the baseball and soccer teams. In the high school level, Snitko also trained with the UCLA men’s soccer team in his free time. Additionally, he played two seasons at the local youth club, North Huntington Beach Futbol Club in which his team, the Untouchables won the state title. After high school graduation, Snitko attended UCLA where he was a player on the UCLA male soccer squad. The year 1992 was the first time he was a substitute in the position of Brad Friedel manned the Bruins nets. In 1993 Snitko took over as the first goalkeeper at UCLA which he was in for the following three seasons. He achieved his most acclaim in his senior year when he was chosen as an All- Star team All American and the ISAA Goalkeeper of the Year. The 31 shutouts he has recorded over the course of his career and 47 victories in his career are second on the list of the team’s respective lists.

In 1996 in 1996, in 1996, the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer (MLS) chose Snitko during the initial selection (fifth all-around) from the MLS College Draft. The year that he was not selected, he did not participate with the Wizards because the team permitted Snitko to practice and play full-time for his U.S. U-23 team while it was preparing to play in the 1996 Summer Olympics at Atlanta, Georgia. Although Snitko was selected for part of the U.S. Olympic team, the team did not make it to the competition since the team also featured Kasey Keller as their first goalie. In the end, Snitko did earn 5 junior national team caps for the U-23 squad.
