Christopher Paul Gardner (born February 9th 1954) is an American businessman and motivational speaker. In the early 1980s, Gardner was homeless while raising his toddler son. He was a stock broker and later established his own brokerage firm Gardner Rich & Co in 1987. The year 2006 was the year that Gardner gave up his share of the company and published a book about his experiences. The memoir was later turned into the motion film The Pursuit of Happyness starring Will Smith.

Impressed by his uncle Henry’s world-wide adventures with his time in the U.S. Navy, Gardner made the decision to join the military when he completed his secondary education. The station he was assigned to was Camp Lejeune in North Carolina for four years, and the assignment was as an hospital corpsman. He was introduced to an accomplished San Francisco cardiac surgeon, Dr. Robert Ellis, who offered Gardner an opportunity to assist Dr. Ellis with cutting- edge clinical research within the University of California Medical Center as well as the Veterans Administration Hospital in San Francisco. Gardner was able to accept the job and relocated into San Francisco upon his discharge from the Navy in 1974. In the span over two years, Gardner was taught how to manage a lab and also to use various surgical procedures. In 1976, he’d been appointed the sole manager of the laboratory.
