Chaya Czernowin is one of the most popular and richest Composer who was born on December 7, 1957 in Haifa, Haifa District, Israel. Adama was created to celebrate Mozart’s birthday by the Salzburg Festival. In her second opera, Czernowin was asked to address Mozart’s Zaide by writing the counterpoint work. Adama which is interspersed with Zaide is a piece that explores the effects of a political environment on the individual , as well as the limited freedom that one enjoys to avoid the negative effects.

Czernowin has been awarded numerous times for her compositions, such as she was awarded the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis (1992), Asahi Shimbun Fellowship Prize (1993) and the Schloss Solitude Fellowship (1996) and the IRCAM Reading Panel (1998) The Composer’s Prize by the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation (2003) and the Rockefeller Foundation Prize (2004) as well as the Fromm Foundation Award (2008) as well as a nomination from the Berlin Wissenschaftskolleg (2008), the Guggenheim Fellowship Award (2011) and the Heidelberger Kunstlerinnenpreis (2016). She was Artist-in-Residence for The Salzburg Festival during 2005-2006, and as part of the Lucerne Festival, Switzerland in 2013.

Czernowin has composed three large scale works for the stage: Pnima … ins Innere (2000), Adama (2004-05), and Infinite now (2016–17). All three carry strong political content. A fourth work, Heart Chamber, is set to premiere in late 2019.

Maim (2001–07), for a large orchestra and a group of soloists, and other works from the 2000s including the electronic works of the experimental studio, speculate about the physicality and motion of material. They touch on a strange and unfamiliar kind of “physics”, which toys with our expectations.

Similar to the political rage of operas Czernowin’s chamber music expresses an indignation with established and accepted norms. Her chamber music from the 1990s investigate the possibilities of formal and temporal divergence. The works Afatsim (1996) in addition to String Quartet (1995), the piece is based on changing the character of the instruments through the use of “meta instruments” – combining several instruments to create one identity before separating the instruments. In this way, the group is able to alter its character within the work. The piece’s unfolding is further broken by cutting and shifting portions of the continuity to create an utterance forest that is chaotic. The Wintersongs series employs the same septet piece, which is reinterpreted five times, creating an entirely new musical experience each time you listen to it.
