Charmaine Dragun Biography

Charmaine Dragun is one of the most popular and richest Journalist who was born on March 21, 1978 in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. Charmaine Margaret Dragun (“‘d r” Ae g U (/’ d r ae g u / ; 21 March 1978 until 2 Nov 2007.) was an Australian broadcast journalist and host. She was a co-anchor on Ten Eyewitness News. Dragun, who was diagnosed with depression and had a an anorexic history was found dead on the 2nd of November, 2007.

On the 2nd of November, 2007 at the age of 29 years old, Dragun committed suicide in The Gap in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. According to reports, Dragun was found lying in the gully for about two hours. She was known to do several times in the days leading up to her death. She also sent a goodbye text message to Struthers, before falling into her death. People who saw someone sitting in the vicinity of the famous suicide spot called police and were told that Dragun died at the time police arrived. Funeral services were held ten days after the fact in the All Saints Church in Greenwood, Western Australia.

During 2010, an official inquest into the medical support surrounding Dragun at the time of her death was held by the Coroner’s Court in Glebe, New South Wales, a suburb of Sydney. The deputy state coroner stated that the ease of access to the Gap had been a causal factor. He also speculated that Dragun may have been misdiagnosed with depression, but according to The Australian, he also said that her medication did not “put [suicidal] ideas into her head or cause her to behave in an irrational way and with no control over her actions”.

Dragun was engaged to Simon Struthers, a forensic investigator, whom she had been dating since she was 16 years old, and they were planning to marry on Dragun’s 30th birthday.

Dragun moved from radio to TV after she received a role in Network Ten. She began with a variety of news stories ranging from entertainment and major nationwide news events and later began regularly reporting on court cases. She would occasionally fill in as presenter in The Perth’s Ten News First and on the 4th of July in 2005, she got named as the permanent anchor for the show. It was broadcast on the Network Ten’s Sydney studio TEN located in Pyrmont, New South Wales. She was the main anchor on Ten News First and also was a guest anchor on national news morning and weekend bulletins as well as presenting Sports Tonight on Fridays. Dragun’s co-anchor was experienced broadcaster Tim Webster, described her as “one of the most professional I’ve ever seen, very meticulous…if she made a mistake she was distraught about it.”

In 2004, about eight months prior to shifting in Sydney, Dragun told her mother that her medication was making her feel numb . She was referred to an acupuncturist who suggested that Dragun stop taking medication completely. Her mother stated that the symptoms of Dragun began to slide “down hill” after six weeks of being off antidepressants. She returned to her home with her parents, and then cut off her connection with Struthers after stating she was unable to bring him joy. She restarted pharmacotherapy on a new class of antidepressants, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), prescribed by her general practitioner (GP), which she took until 2007.

When she relocated from Sydney at the end of 2005 Dragun together with her friend Struthers, and, after a couple of months, they were living with each other in Sydney. Dragun struggled to adjust to the new place and also being far from her family. She began working with a psychologist who she was said to have an excellent relationship with, as per Dragun’s mother.

Around August or September 2007, Dragun’s symptoms worsened and her psychologist recommended that Dragun consult a psychiatrist about adjusting her medication. In October 2007, her new psychiatrist had initiated a cross- taper to change Dragun from the SNRI to a different brand of SSRI, a change which can take up to six weeks to take effect. Dragun initially told her mother that she was optimistic about the switch, but after less than three weeks, she told her mother over the phone that she was having thoughts of suicide and that she felt “worthless.” Dragun committed suicide a few days later.
