That same year, he was given an honorary degree by his alma mater the University of Delaware. In 2013, the University of Missouri awarded him its Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism.

He lived the majority of his existence in Washington, D.C. area while teaching for a short time within New Jersey (at Princeton) and Massachusetts (at Harvard).
