On the 9th of February, 2010 Santos came back to Portugal to replace fired Jose Mota at Leixoes SC. On the 21st of October, Santos returned to his former club Pontevedra following the departure of Angel Viadero.

Santos left Sevilla in the summer of 1999 following the team’s top flight promotions, Santos spent the following seasons at CD Tenerife, Polideportivo Ejido, Cordoba CF, UD Almeria, and UD Vecindario, all of which were in the second tier of the national league which was safe until 2000-01. He also played a portion of 2002-03’s campaign at Braga and suffered similar fate.

In Poio, Province of Pontevedra, Santos began working as manager when he was just 30 years old with the his local club Pontevedra CF, before moving to Galician neighbor SD Compostela in 1989. In his six-year tenure at the club, he steered SD Compostela from 4th division up until La Liga.

After helping Compos keep their top-flight status during the 1994-95 campaign, Santos continued to play in the region and signed as a player with Celta de Vigo, and staying in the club for two seasons. The 1997-98 season began with Portugal in the Portuguese club S.C. Braga, being dismissed after just a few months (the team eventually made it to the final of the national cup) and then returning to his homeland in the form of Sevilla FC, in the second division.
