Gailey was born in Gainesville, Georgia, in 1952. He was a student at Americus High School located in Americus, Georgia, where he was awarded Eagle Scout honors, and an honorary letterman in high school basketball, football, baseball and golf. In football the state, he was an all-state selection at quarterback. Gailey completed his studies at Americus High School in 1970.

Gailey made the move to the NFL in the following year, after which Gailey was a part of the Denver Broncos signed him as an assistant to the offensive team as well as special team coach. The team went on to make three Super Bowl appearances during his six-year stint. The year 1991 was the time Gailey was let go of the NFL to be the coaching for Birmingham Fire. Birmingham Fire of the World League of American Football, where the team reached the playoffs both times when he was head coach.

In 1998, Gailey was hired to take over a struggling Dallas Cowboys squad, one that had faltered under Barry Switzer during his last year. Gailey’s Cowboys won the NFC East in 1998, and made the playoffs under his two years at the reins, although they failed to win a playoff game. Gailey is the only Cowboys coach to make the playoffs every season with his team.

Gailey returned to the offensive coordinator role, this time with the Miami Dolphins for the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

As of 1983, Gailey came back to Troy to take the role of head coach for Troy University. In his first year as the head coach, he guided the Trojans to 7-4 overall. In his second year as the head coach during 1984, he guided his 3rd- ranked Trojans to a 12-2-1 record leading to winning the NCAA Division II national championship beating the top-ranked North Dakota State, 18-17 to claim the title.

Thomas Chandler Gailey Jr. (born on January 5, 1952) is a American football coach, who is the offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). Gailey was previously Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Buffalo Bills.

Gailey studied at his time at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he was a three-year member of Coach Doug Dickey’s Florida Gators football team as an offensive lineman from 1971 to 1973. Gailey completed his studies at Florida with the degree of bachelor’s in physical education in 1974.

After a one-year stint as head coach at Samford University, he returned to the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After starting off as coach for the wide receivers, then moved up to offensive coordinator for the 1996 and 1997 NFL seasons. The Steelers won their division all four years, and made one Super Bowl appearance.
