Chad James Ruhwedel (born May 7 90, 1991) was an American professional defenseman in ice hockey who is contracted with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL).

After the expiration to his deal with the Sabres on July 1, 2016 Ruhwedel became an unrestricted free agent under sign a one-year, two-way contract with the current Stanley Cup champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins. Ruhwedel scored his debut National Hockey League goal on December 23rd of 2016 in a victory of 4-1 against New Jersey Devils. New Jersey Devils. He split his time during 2016-17 season playing 28 games in minors for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and 34 games Pittsburgh in the NHL. He was a part of six playoff games. Ruhwedel was hit by a concussion during game four of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Ottawa Senators, and missed the remainder of the year. The Penguins were able to take home their Stanley Cup for the second consecutive season. However, since Ruhwedel played the majority of the season playing in the American Hockey League (AHL) and did not receive his name on the trophy. Pittsburgh did provide him with one day to enjoy his name on the Stanley Cup, and a Stanley Cup ring.

Ruhwedel began his youth playing hockey on the ice during the San Diego Ice Arena while living in Scripps Ranch. He then participated in his team the San Diego Junior Gulls and La Jolla Jaguars as a youngster, and then joined the Los Angeles Kings U18 AAA team. Following junior hockey, Ruhwedel joined the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL and was awarded an Division I college hockey scholarship to UMass Lowell. Ruhwedel was a player at UMass Lowell from 2010 to the year 2013. He was selected on the Hockey East All-Academic Team in 2010-11, 2011, 2012, and 2012-13. In 2011-12 he was a Hockey East Honorable Mention All-Star, and in 2012-13 he was a Hockey East First-Team All-Star, and an AHCA East First-Team All-American. He also received the Bob Monahan Award as the most outstanding defenceman from New England.

On the 13th of April 2013, Ruhwedel signed a two-year entry-level deal as a free agent undrafted for the Buffalo Sabres. The same day the following day, he played his NHL debut with the Sabres in a match in which they played The Philadelphia Flyers.

On June 22, 2017, the Penguins re-signed Ruhwedel to a two-year, $1.3 million extension with an annual average of $650,000.
