DeSmith agreed to a plea deal on December 4, 2014. DeSmith pleaded guilty to all charges, including domestic abuse, with the exception of one count of disorderly behavior. New Hampshire law considers “disorderly behavior” a violation, not a misdemeanor. He was sentenced with a $124 fine, and 12 months probation. A diversion agreement, which included community service, was also signed by DeSmith. This would result in all charges being dismissed after twelve months. DeSmith accepted the terms of his plea deal and was released from further trouble. DeSmith was not reinstated as a UNH Wildcats Hockey player, although he was still enrolled as an undergraduate. He also did not play elsewhere during the season.

On June 30, 2015, DeSmith signed a contract for the 2015–16 season with an ECHL team, the Wheeling Nailers, after the NCAA denied a transfer waiver to play a senior season of college hockey. He would have been ineligible to play college hockey after 2015-2016, because the NCAA normally only allows student- athletes five academic years to use up their standard four seasons of eligibility.

DeSmith studied business at University of New Hampshire. He played hockey for the Wildcats between 2011 and 2014. He had a record of 9-10-1 in his first season. On January 11, 2011, he was the first to be shut out in his college career. He had a 2.33 GAA and a 0.926 saving percentage at the end of his first year. He had at least 30 saves in ten different games during the regular season. In the Hockey East quarterfinals against Boston University, he recorded a record 50 saves. He was the Hockey East Defensive Player and Week for February 6th 2012 and the Hockey East Rookie of Week for January 11th 2012. He was also named the Service Credit Union Student Athlete of Week twice, for the week February 13th 2012 and March 5th 2012. Later, he was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team for the 2011-12 season.
