Bancks was a Junior hockey player with the Junior B Kimberley Dynamiters in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League from 2005-06. He then played for the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Western Hockey League (WHL) as a late season player. Between 2006 and 2010, he played four seasons with the Hurricanes, scoring 58 goals as well as 120 assists in 262 matches.
Bancks was not selected in the NHL draft and, after he graduated from junior hockey, was signed to an American Hockey League contract with the Abbotsford Heat. In 2010-11, he played his first season of professional hockey. Although he was limited to 29 games due to a concussion, Bancks still scored 19 goals. He impressed his team and Jim Playfair, the head coach, said that if Bancks hadn’t been injured throughout the season Abbotsford wouldn’t have missed the AHL playoffs. The Calgary Flames, parent club of Heat, signed him to an NHL contract because of his performance. He was with the Heat the next two seasons, scoring 10 in 55 games in 2011-12 and 12 in the 59 games the year after.
On October 14, 2016, the day before the start of this third full season with the team, Bancks was named captain of the Utica Comets.
