Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev is one of the most popular and richest Art Historian who was born on December 2, 1957 in Ridgewood, New Jersey, United States. Her mother, Piedmont, Italy was her mother. Both of them studied in Turin in the middle 1950s. Her father fled Bulgaria in World War II. He was a Turin medical student. Her mother studied Philosophy at Turin, and later received a PhD in archeology. In the 1950s, her parents immigrated to the United States. She was born there.
After many years as an independent curator of exhibitions and curating summer shows at Villa Medici, Rome, Italy from 1998 to 2000, she became the Senior Curator at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, which is an affiliate of The Museum of Modern Art. She was the Senior Curator at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York from 1999 to 2001. This position saw her co-organize the first edition, Greater New York. She then coordinated the groundbreaking survey of Janet Cardiff’s work at PS1. She was then appointed Chief Curator of the Castello di Rivoli Museum, Turin, Italy from 2001 to 2008. In 2009, she became Interim Director. Since then, she has worked as a curator all over the world. She was, among other things, the Artistic Director of 2008’s 16th Biennale of Sydney, entitled Revolutions-Forms That Turn. She was named Artistic Director of the thirteenth edition documenta (13), in Kassel, Germany, on December 3, 2008. She curated the 14th Istanbul Biennial, “SaltWater: a Theorie of Thought Forms”, in 2015.
She has lectured widely at art and educational institutions and Universities for the Arts and Philosophy, including the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles; Cornell University, Ithaca; Monash University, Melbourne; Di Tella University, Buenos Aires; Harvard University, Boston; and MIT, Boston. In 2018, she was Lead Professor of the program Shanghai Curators Lab at Shanghai Academy of Fine Art, Shanghai. In 2014, she received the Leverhulme Professorship from the University of Leeds. In 2013, she was also the Menschel Visiting Professor in Art at The Cooper Union, New York as well as the Pernod Ricard Visiting Professor in the philosophy of art and naturecultures at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main / Institut für Philosophie. In 2015 she was Getty Visiting Scholar.
She moved to Rome after graduation to work as an art critic in daily newspapers such as Il Sole 24 Ore and Reporter. Her reporting was centered around contemporary art and the avant-garde of the early 20th century. She is a prolific writer on Arte Povera, including in her book Arte Povera: Themes and Movements, Phaidon Press, London. In 1996/97, she wrote the first monographs about the work of South African artist William Kentridge (Brussels Palais des Beaux Arts), and Janet Cardiff (New York, PS1 Modern Art Center) in 2001. She is the author of books on Adrian Villar Rojas (2018), Hito Steyerl (2018), Nalini Malani (2018) and Giovanni Anselmo (2016). Her books include dOCUMENTA (13), the 100 Notes-100 Thoughts series, and The Book of Books (2011)-12.

Carolyn Christov–Bakargiev was born December 2, 1957 in Ridgewood, New Jersey. She is an Italian-American writer and art historian. She was awarded the 2019 Audrey Irmas Award of Curatorial Excellence. Currently, she is the Director of Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea and Fondazione Francesco Federico Cerruti in Turin. She is also the Edith Kreeger Wolf Distinguished Professor in Art Theory and Practice, Northwestern University.
She was raised partly in Washington DC. She is a dual citizen of Italy and America. After completing her Baccalaureate in French at a French lycée in Washington, she returned to Europe and studied literature, philology and art history at University of Pisa. She graduated summa cumlaude in 1981 with a thesis on American poetry and painting of the 1950s, focusing on Frank O’Hara’s relationship to Abstract Expressionism.

Her stewardship of dOCUMENTA(13), considered to be one of the most intellectual and significant exhibitions in the art world, renewed one of the exhibition’s primal intentions to enlist culture as an agent of reconstruction, healing and dialogue.
